Registered Nurse (RN)

A. U.S./Canadian school gradues

After completing all required education, examinations, and training, nursing school graduates can apply to obtain a full, unrestricted license with the appropriate state board of registered nursing. First-time examination candidates may also apply for an interim permit to work under the direct supervision of a licensed registered nurse while awaiting the results of their examination. Interim permits cannot be issued until the applicant has completed all nursing requirements, has been found eligible for the examination, and the DOJ and FBI have completed processing the applicant’s fingerprints and notified the state board of the results. Interim permits will be issued one time only and are valid for no longer than six months.

Before granting you a license, the appropriate state board of registered nursing will review and evaluate your application and, if it finds you eligible, will give you authorization (ATT) to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
Since every state registered nursing board has different laws governing licensure, each board will provide you with important, detailed instructions regarding the registration process with the NCLEX-RN testing service and board licensing. All applicants must take and pass the NCLEX-RN to become a licensed registered nurse in United States. An exception applies for licensed Canadian registered nurses who have passed an acceptable five-part Canadian examination.

You may also contact one of our expert advisors for details regarding your state’s laws governing registered nurse licensure.

B.Foreign nursing school graduates

In addition to all requirements for U.S./Canadian nursing school graduates, foreign nursing school graduates must also provide a Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) of or CGFNS International certificate (an exception apply for those applicants who have a legal right to work in the United States), English language proficiency passing exam score (some exceptions apply), proof of secondary education in addition to nursing education, and a diploma that allows you to practice as a professional nurse in the country where you were educated.

You can find more information on credentialing, state licensing requirements, and processing on our International Graduates Assistance Program webpage.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Every state has different laws, rules, and regulations as well as education, licensing, and certification requirements for APRNs. Depending on your area of specialization, additional education, certification, accreditation, terminal degrees, post-nominal degrees, and the like may be required.

Med Consulting Agency strongly advises APRN candidates to contact their state nursing boards to obtain more information regarding the required education, certification, accreditation, terminal degrees, and post-nominal degrees, as well as any exceptions to the rules and grandfathering provisions.

You may find additional licensing information regarding the required fees and timelines for your state by clicking the appropriate state on the search bar.
